VIDA bioenergy marks gas-to-grid milestone at Wormslade

Breda, the Netherlands, July 21 – VIDA bioenergy has achieved a major milestone at its Wormslade biogas facility in the UK, with the successful injection of biomethane into the UK gas grid. This marks the start of commercial operations, enabling the plant to supply renewable biomethane to the UK gas grid.

“Wormslade demonstrates our commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions that create value for local communities and support the UK’s decarbonisation ambitions,” said Lars Boetje, CEO of VIDA bioenergy. “The successful injection of biomethane into the UK gas grid is a defining milestone for the Wormslade project and an important achievement for VIDA bioenergy. It allows us to begin ramping up production towards full capacity over the coming months,” he added.

The Wormslade plant is designed to process approximately 46,000 tonnes of feedstock annually, producing around 68 GWh of renewable biomethane each year – enough to heat more than 5,000 homes. It will also generate approximately 70,000 tonnes of nutrient-rich digestate annually, which will be returned to the agricultural sector as an organic fertiliser, supporting circular farming practices and reducing reliance on synthetic fertilisers.

Richard Sansom, Director of Cadent’s East Midlands Network, said: “It’s fantastic to see more home-grown green gas helping to meet the energy needs of local communities, and I congratulate VIDA bioenergy on reaching this significant milestone. The potential for biomethane in the UK is huge and Cadent is targeting a five-fold increase in production over the next decade. Projects such as Wormslade are helping to turn that ambition into reality.”

Wormslade is the fourth biogas facility to become operational within VIDA bioenergy’s growing portfolio and represents another important step in the company’s strategy to expand renewable gas production across Europe.

Over the coming months, VIDA bioenergy will continue increasing biomethane production towards full operating capacity, which is expected by October 2026. The project team will also complete commissioning of the remaining auxiliary systems before final performance testing and handover to the operations team.

The Wormslade facility reinforces VIDA bioenergy’s mission to accelerate the energy transition to a sustainable, circular future by locally producing renewable bioenergy that affordably and reliably powers communities and reduces carbon emissions.
