VIDA bioenergy: Powering the future of renewable fuels

VIDA bioenergy, a 100% subsidiary of VTTI and a specialist in renewable natural gas (RNG) and biogas, is making rapid strides in driving Europe’s energy transition. In a recent interview with Bioenergy Insight, VIDA Bioenergy’s CEO, Lars Boetje, shared the company’s ambitious mission, key projects, and its vision for a sustainable, low-carbon future.

Dedicated to renewable energy growth

VIDA bioenergy was officially launched in January 2025, following VTTI’s decision to create a standalone business  to focus  on the RNG and biogas market. By separating from VTTI’s core energy infrastructure operations, VIDA bioenergy can allocate specialized resources and expertise to drive innovation and growth in renewable fuels.

“The rationale was to accelerate the growth of the RNG and biogas business by having a dedicated unit focused on that market,” said Lars Boetje. “This allows VIDA bioenergy to specialise and dedicate specific resources to developing the RNG and biogas opportunities.”

Key milestones and projects

VIDA bioenergy is already making significant progress:

  • Groundbreaking at VIDA Wormslade, UK: A new facility that, once operational in mid-2026, will produce enough clean biomethane to heat over 5,000 homes annually.
  • VIDA Glentham Grid Injection : Another UK facility in Lincolnshire has successfully injected its first biomethane into the National Transmission System, with an annual output of over 60 GWh.
  • New Developments in the Netherlands: Projects include revamping a facility near ’s-Hertogenbosch and developing a 400 GWh biogas/biomethane plant in Limburg, with final investment decisions targeted for 2026.

In addition to biomethane, VIDA bioenergy produces liquid CO₂ and organic  fertilisers, advancing the circular economy and reducing dependence on fossil-based inputs.

Driving impact across Europe

VIDA bioenergy’s strategy focuses on expanding within Europe – primarily the UK, Netherlands, and Poland – while advocating for streamlined regulations to accelerate biogas plant development.

“Biomethane is fundamental to making the energy transition happen,” Lars explained. “We’re committed to strengthening Europe with more biogas, supporting local communities, and achieving real decarbonisation.”

Vision for Success

Looking ahead, VIDA bioenergy’s priorities are:

  • Ensuring safety for all employees and contractors.
  • Maximising biomethane production at existing sites.
  • Advancing major projects, including VIDA Wormslade and the Limburg development.
